Amber is a steamship wreck in County Down, lost in 1917 and still standing seven metres high beneath thirty-five metres of water. The sea took a whole machine, not a scattered heap of ribs and iron, leaving a roomy dark shape for life to move through. Whatever boarded her may have seen a chamber where pressure has done its quiet work, turning human making into a place the ocean can inhabit.
