Mahee Island

Mahee Island holds the oldest excavated tide mill in the world, dated by dendrochronology to 619, proving that monastic engineers harnessed the Strangford Lough swell before most of Europe understood tidal power. The site also preserves a round tower, ruined church, cashel and fields associated with Nendrum Monastery, which tradition credits to Mochaoi in the fifth century. That combination makes the island a rare place where spiritual founding, scientific dating and surviving architecture meet without forcing one to dismiss the others.
