Carrowdore Castle is an 1818 rusticated gothic house in County Down, built with red brick turrets, sandstone porches and a projecting round tower that still stands beside its gatehouse. It may have been designed to look like a ruined medieval fortress before it was even finished, giving its owners a stage for pride rather than a shield for war. The large glazed conservatories added later suggest the castle kept changing its character, taking in light and comfort while retaining its invented ancient shape.
