White's Fort anchors the birth of Knoxville, Tennessee, when James White raised a defensible post on the Trans-Appalachian frontier in 1786. It became the capital of the Southwest Territory in 1790, and the nearby settlement named for Henry Knox grew into the first capital of Tennessee in 1796. The fort was not a decorative relic; it was the reason a scattered frontier place acquired a government, a boundary and a direction.
