Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Dooneen (barrymore By.)

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Two earthen rings once stood in Dooneen, now vanished or hidden beneath grass and memory. They were human-made, likely shelters or markers for a lost community, yet local tradition still calls them fairy forts. The distinction matters less than the shape they left behind: a circle of soil that resisted forgetting.
According to Power (197, 20) there were 'two lioses or remains of them' in this townland. Exact locations not known. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 2: East and South Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1994). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 14 January 2009
