Indicated

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a vanished Kerry ringfort whose stones were carried to nearby field boundaries, leaving only a circular ghost on a west-facing slope. It faces north over Sliabh Luachra, where the land still holds the shape of a door that people stopped using. The fort did not disappear so much as it moved into the fields, becoming the edges of ordinary life.
In pasture, on a W-facing slope with views N over Sliabh Luachra. Indicated as a circular area (diam. c. 15m) defined by a solid line on the 1894 OS 6-inch map. It is not visible at ground level. According to local information, stones from this enclosure were placed on the nearby field boundaries in the past. Compiled by: Elizabeth Byrne, Ursula Egan and Sheila Ronan, Archaeological Survey Unit, University College, Cork. Date of upload: 31 January 2011
