Doonbreen is a steep rocky knoll on the north shore of Darrynane Bay where locals called Altar Hill the site of hidden Mass during Penal Times. Its flat circular top and buried fort remains suggest a place where worship and defence became one under danger.

Doonbreen/Dun Braoin(?): This site is referred to locally as 'Altar Hill', a place where Mass was celebrated in Penal Times (Ó Cíobháin 1984a, 63). It is a steep-sided, rocky knoll with a flat upper surface of roughly circular outline and is located on the N shore of Darrynane Bay. The OSRNB refer to the 'remains of an old fort . . . about 3 chains E of Altar Hill'. There is, however, no indication of a monument at this location now. The above description is derived from A.
