Half a metre lower than the grass and no wider than a man’s shoulders, the Cave runs four metres south through the ringfort, its ceiling a row of overlapping slabs and its walls rough rounded stone. The floor rises until it nearly touches the lintels, leaving only a narrow gap at the far end that local information says opens into a small chamber. Whatever it stored, hid or led to, its maker built it just large enough for one person to disappear into.

In the N half of a ringfort (MA072-018001-). This Man-made underground passage is indicated as ‘Cave’ in the NW quadrant of the ringfort on the 1930 OS 6-inch map. An opening (2m E−W; 1m N−S), with a roof lintel exposed on its S edge, is evident at ground level. It opens into the N end of a subterranean passage (L 4.2m N−S; Wth 0.8m; H c. 1.1m) which extends to S. The walls are built of rough, rounded stone rubble. The roof is a horizontal, row of large, contiguous or overlapping stone slabs/lintels. The earthen floor rises sharply towards the S end of the passage, until it reaches the level of the lintels, where a small, narrow gap is visible, opening at ground surface. This rising floor level may be partly the result of soil collapse and infill. According to local information, the S end of the chamber opens into a small chamber.
