What is recorded here
Under the southwest quadrant of Lisnagun ringfort, three narrow chambers cut into living rock wait in darkness. Each measures about a metre high and a metre and a half wide, with barrel-vaulted ceilings and creepways linking them like rooms in a forgotten house. Two entrances and a small air vent suggest the passage was used, not abandoned, perhaps for storage, refuge or ritual in seasons when the land above became hostile. The shape is too deliberate for chance and too small for grandeur, which is why it remains memorable.
In SW quadrant Lisnagun ringfort (CO135-031001-). Local tradition and hollow indicated position prior to excavation. Excavation (1987/88) revealed three earth-cut chambers (Wth c. 1.5m; H c. 1m) joined by creepways; ceilings barrel-vaulted. Two entrances and air vent (pers. comm. J. O'Sullivan).
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Volume 1: West Cork' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1992). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
