Two large shell middens filled the interior of the Dalkey Island promontory fort before excavation in the mid-1950s. Pig bones, polished stone axes, potsherds and limpet scoops lay mixed inside the ancient trash heap. People may have eaten, worked and discarded along that coastal ridge while the sea gave and took around them.

Excavations in the interior of the promontory fort (DU023-029001-) at Dalkey Island in the mid-1950s revealed evidence for two large shell middens. The animal bone content included a high proportion of pig remains.
