Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a circular earthen fort on a Mayo ridge, hidden inside an impenetrable blackthorn thicket. Its steep northern and eastern edges drop away like a forgotten cliff, while a farm track still skirts the western side. The fort may have been a home, a refuge or a boundary marker before thorns swallowed it.
In pasture, located on top of a ridge at the W end, with a steep fall of ground to N and E and a more gradual undulating slope at S. Roughly circular (diam. c. 25m) earthen platform defined by a scarp (H 1-1.2m at NW), which is incorporated into later field fences at N and S, and skirted by a farm trackway at W. The interior appears to be level. The rath is engulfed in a dense, impenetrable thicket of blackthorn, which impeded inspection. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 5 May 2021
