Cross-slab in Inishcaltra OR Holy Island

An inscribed slab, removed to Adare by Lord Dunraven prior to 1865 and recorded and depicted in the memorials of Adare Manor (Okasha and Forsyth 2001, 89). It measured 0.6m by 0.45m and bore a Latin cross formed of a band doubled along the line of the arms and shaft and interlacing into a triquetra knot at the terminals. The cross was set inside a single-line frame. It bore an inscription below the frame which read: ‘OR DO CHUNN’. The precise location of this slab is unknown. Dated to the early medieval period, likely between the 8th and 11th centuries, the cross-slab may have served a Christian commemorative or liturgical function. Its relocation from Inishcaltra, sometimes called "Holy Island," suggests a possible ecclesiastical or pilgrimage site in the area.
