What is recorded here

Inishcaltra OR Holy Island holds a missing cross-base: a small tapering stone once set at the north wall of St. Caimin’s church. Macalister measured it in 1916-17, but the socket itself vanished from description, and the base now has no known place. What remains is a hole in the story, waiting for the stone to reappear or admit it never left the island at all.
A possible cross-base, described by Macalister (1916-17, 145, no. 1) as a ‘socket-stone’ (H 0.24m [9.5in]; 0.2m [8in] square, tapering to 0.12m [5in] square). The socket is not described. Although Macalister noted the stone at the N wall of St. Caimin’s church (CL029-009011-) the present location is not known. Compiled by: Mary Tunney Date of upload: 29 September 2015
