On High Island in County Galway, an incomplete garnet mica-schist slab once sat atop the south church wall, its deep edge notch hinting at a lost cross shape. Small, undecorated and broken, it may have marked a sacred threshold before time and weather stripped it of meaning. Now kept at the Athenry depot, the fragment still carries the weight of that forgotten shape.

Recorded by Fisher (2014, 218, no. 44, Fig. 7.7), this incomplete cross-slab (H 0.28m; Wth 0.18m; T 0.02m) of garnet mica-schist was found on top of the S wall of the church enclosure (GA021-026021-) on High Island. An irregular slab, it is undecorated. A deep notch in the surviving edge suggests that it was a cruciform type of cross-slab. It is now in the care of the OPW (Athenry depot, Co. Likely dating to the early medieval period, this cross-slab may have originally formed part of a Christian monument or churchyard marker. Its small size and fragmentary state suggest it could have been repurposed or repositioned during later construction or maintenance of the church enclosure.
