Cross-slab in High Island

Recorded by Fisher (2014, 214, no. 34, Fig. 7.6), this redeposited kite-shaped cross-slab (H 0.51m; Wth 0.31m; T 0.03m) of garnet mica-schist was found within the stepped NW passage through the ecclesiastical enclosure (GA021-026022-) on High Island. Its foot and left edge are broken. One face is decorated. It bears a Latin cross, partly in outline and partly in low relief, around a linear cross with a central roundel. The latter encloses an incised linear Greek cross. The side-arms have D-shaped terminals and the upper and lower ones are forked. There are also linear Latin crosses in the lower quadrants of slab. Probably dating to the early medieval period, this cross-slab may have originally marked a Christian burial or served as a boundary marker within a religious site. Its relocation suggests later disturbance or repurposing, though specific folklore or use remains unrecorded.
