Cross-slab

What is recorded here

Cross-Slab (KE089-049001-): The cross-slab stands at the W end of a raised rectangular platform that measures 4.8m N-S x 4m E-W and is defined by slabs set on end. It is largely composed of small stones, including much quartz. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 933. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload: 30 July 2013
Likely dating to the early medieval period, this cross-slab may have had a Christian ritual or commemorative function, possibly associated with a small monastic or burial site. Its placement on a stone-defined platform suggests it was a focal point for local worship or memory.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
