Cross in High Island

Described by Fisher (2014, 222, no. 56, Fig. 7.9) as an undecorated roughly quadrangular cross-base (L 0.79m; Wth 0.78m; T 0.1m) of garnet mica-schist. It is beside the penitential station (GA021-026017-) on the S side of the lower lake on High Island, near the SE landing. It is pierced with a roughly rectangular socket that is almost centrally placed. An incomplete T-shaped slab (H 0.24m; 0.54m; T 0.08m) is now set in the socket (ibid. no. 57). Various suggestions have been put forward regarding the latter slab: it may be the tenon/stem of a cross associated with the cross-base or it may be the head and incomplete arms of an unrelated cruciform cross-slab.
