Crannog in Derryhoney is an artificial island built by humans in County Fermanagh, preserved as a scheduled archaeological site. The name itself reveals the purpose: a crannog is a made island, often raised from lake sediment and reinforced with wood, stone or imported soil. People built these places to live, hide, worship or store what mattered when land was crowded or danger was near. The water did not disappear; it participated. Every step onto the island was also a step into the lake, because the lake gave up material for the island to exist.
