Pol-an-Ionain is a recorded cave in County Clare, Ireland, named for the ivy covering the cliff above its entrance rather than a Grecian column-like stalactite as once believed. The valley below Ballynalachan Castle widens to four hundred yards before ending against a ridge, with limestone cliffs on both sides and a small stream disappearing into a swallet west of the road. Two members of The Craven Pothole Club made the first recorded entry in Whitsun 1952, leaving many questions unanswered until a fuller survey followed in 1956. The cave may extend beyond the present explorable limit, continuing the hidden life of the Coolagh River system under the quiet valley floor.
