Field boundary in Courhoor

Field boundary

What is recorded here

Two broken rubble walls cross a hundred metres of cutaway bog at the mouth of Glen Valley, marking a field boundary that predates the machines which scarred the land. They are low, barely thirty centimetres high, yet they hold the shape of a place now reduced to wet black earth. A small mound of field stones sits at the eastern edge, perhaps a clearance cairn built by hands that refused to let the boundary disappear without a trace.
On level ground in largely cutaway bog at the mouth of Glen Valley. Two discontinuous stretches of wall orientated E-W and NE-SW extend over an area 100m square. Both walls are rubble-built (Wth 1.4m, H 0.3m). A low mound of field stones (D 1.5m, H 0.3m), possibly a clearance cairn, adjoins them at E. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. I - West Galway'. Compiled by Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1993).
