Indicated

Children's burial ground

What is recorded here

Indicated is a children's burial ground in County Galway, Ireland. It lies immediately south of a church and forms an L-shaped area about eighteen metres wide and seventeen metres deep. Orderly lines of grave markers run north to south, pointing east to west. Some markers reuse dressed stone fragments taken from the church itself. The place is small, clear and quietly striking: a child's graveyard kept close to the building where prayer and death both belonged.
Immediately S of a church (GA057-085001-). A roughly L-shaped area (E-W 18m, N-S 17.3m) delimited by the church to N and a house site (GA057-085002-) to E; elsewhere no enclosing element is visible. Generally orderly N-S running lines of grave-markers oriented E-W are visible. Some dressed stone fragments from the church were also used. (O'Flanagan 1927, Vol. 1, 224) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'. Compiled by Olive Alcock, Kathy de hÓra and Paul Gosling (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). Date of upload: 05 August 2010
