Garnish Island is a fifteen-hectare garden in Glengarriff Bay where a straight Martello tower watches the water and exotic plants thrive under a pine shelter belt. John Annan Bryce bought the island from the War Office in 1910, giving Harold Peto a rare chance to build dreaming paths, a Grecian temple and an Italian casita before death stopped the mansion. Roland Bryce later returned the place to the Irish nation, turning a private fantasy into a public wonder that ferries still carry across the bay.
