Garinish is a fifteen-hectare island in Bantry Bay where John Annan Bryce bought rock and dream from the State in 1910. Harold Peto shaped that desire into gardens, a clock tower and an unfinished mansion, while a straight-backed Martello tower watched the water for ships that never came. Bryce’s son later gave the place to Ireland, turning a private fantasy into a public garden. The population still falls and rises like a breath, but the pines, seas and stones keep the shape of what was imagined there.
