Hewitt House

Corner-sited end-of-terrace five-bay three-storey former house over basement, built c. 1820, now in use as school. Hipped and pitched tile roof with rendered parapet and rendered chimneystack. Rendered walls with render cornice, render platbands at sill levels and having render platbands between basement and first floor. Timber sash windows with stone sills. Round-headed door opening with moulded render surround, pair of Ionic columns flanking timber panelled door, and having glazed fanlight above. Cast-iron railings set on limestone plinths, with tooled limestone bridge over basement area leading to entrance door. Nineteenth century Ordnance Survey benchmark carved into limestone plinth at corner of site. Retaining some interior features, such as decorative plasterwork, open well staircase, and timber panelled shutters and doors.

This former house forms part of a significant group of buildings, built in the early nineteenth century, on both sides of St. Patrick's Hill, the north side of St. Patrick's Place and part of Sidney Place. These former houses are interesting examples of late Georgian architecture in Cork city. The scale and form of this corner-sited former house make it a positive addition to the streetscape, and a fine termination to the terrace. The building retains many interesting features and materials, such as the moulded render details, Ionic doorcase, limestone threshold, benchmark and cast-iron railings. The survival of many interior features contributes to its architectural heritage significance.
