Castlehaven Castle belonged to the O’Driscolls, probably among the most ancient families in West Cork, possibly tracing origins to the first people who reached Ireland from Iberia. Alexander O’Driscoll acted as a middle man in Skibbereen around 1799 before dismissal in 1820, while other O’Driscolls were superceded between 1810 and 1830. The castle has vanished, leaving only a sketch by Edith Somerville and a warning that this coast belonged to people who remembered distance as kinship.
