Settlement cluster in Coonagh West

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

Correen Castle stood beside a cluster of dwellings in Coonagh West when the Down Survey mapped North Liberties, marking a lived-in centre rather than an empty field. That centre has vanished beneath a modern car park, erasing the castle and probably the homes that depended on it. People may have parked cars above kitchens, yards and streets without knowing they were driving through a lost neighbourhood.
Correen Castle, annotated 'Counagh' on the Down Survey Map of County Clare. This castle (LI005-001001-) is depicted as a tower house type structure standing beside a cluster of dwellings on the Down Survey Barony map of North Liberties (Hib. Reg.). A modern car park is located in the area where the castle stood on the OS 6-inch maps.
