Coolnahau holds a rectangular chamber carved beneath an overhanging rock, its stone walls limiting the space to 3.3m by 2m and 1.7m high. Local tradition associates the structure with St. Moling, suggesting the chamber may have served worship, shelter or meditation long before it became a curiosity. The rock leans like a roof given by the earth itself, while the built walls show that people shaped the place rather than merely discovering it.
