Embanked enclosure

Fairy fort / ringfort

What is recorded here

Embanked enclosure is a fairy fort or ringfort in Coolnagoppoge, County Waterford, Ireland. The 1840 Ordnance Survey map marked a subcircular embanked enclosure with an external diameter of roughly 45 to 50 metres. That same account recorded the site in pasture on top of a broad hill and stated that it was not visible at ground level during the observation recorded there.
Marked as an embanked subcircular enclosure (ext. diam. c. 45-50m) on the 1840 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. Situated in pasture on top of a broad hill, it is not visible at ground level. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Waterford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1999). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload/revision: 26 July 2010
