Bullock Pot

Bullock Pot is a narrow, water-filled cave in County Clare that began as a roadside trap when a bullock fell into the chamber and had to be stunned before it could be dragged out. The animal gave the place its name, but the cave kept its own rules, twisting under the road and forcing later explorers to crawl through wet rifts, chert-studded floors and ladder drops. What sounded like a short local curiosity became a long, arduous passage because the earth did not distinguish between a beast, a boy with a ladder or a man mapping the dark.
