Settlement cluster in Cloonbonniff

Settlement cluster

What is recorded here

Four houses clustered in Cloonbonniff when surveyed in 1701, perhaps belonging to one extended family or neighbouring tenants sharing a field. They vanished from later identification, leaving behind a ghost of domestic life: kitchens warming, children running between walls, neighbours arguing over fences. The survey captured them only as marks on a page, stripping away the voices and laughter that once filled the townland.
This record refers a cluster of four houses shown in Cloonbonniff townland on a 1701 Trustees Survey map (NLI microfilm, no. 645, p. 31). The precise location of the houses is unknown. Compiled by: Jane O'Shaughnessy Date of upload: 17 February 2023
