What is recorded here

Fort is a vanished ringfort in County Longford, reduced from a thirty-three-metre earthen circle to memory before modern cameras arrived. It faced east-southeast, held a shallow ditch, and stood twenty metres above a second fort, suggesting a small clustered settlement rather than a lonely outpost. Fields and forgetting erased it, but the shape remains clear enough to picture: a hand-made horizon, a doorway, a life lived inside the curve.

In pasture on a gentle ESE-facing slope. Depicted as an irregular enclosure with the designation 'Fort' on the 1837 ed. of the OS 6-inch map. A report in 1975 (SMR file) recorded an almost completely levelled circular area (diam. c. 33m) enclosed by a low bank and a shallow external fosse at SE, S and W. The NE quadrant was cut by a NW-SE running field boundary and only a low rise with slight traces of the fosse survived to its NE. The original entrance was not recognisable. On re-inspection in 1988 the monument was not visible at ground level. Another ringfort (LF014-102----) lies c. 20m to the S. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 5 December 2012
