Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Clonwhelan

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not fairy forts. They are human houses, farms and strongholds from before written records. The circle in Clonwhelan is no different. A family or clan lived there, raised children, buried the dead and left a round scar in the earth. Forgetting that scar does not undo the life it records.
In low-lying pasture. A report in 1976 (SMR file) recorded a raised circular area (diam. c. 28m) enclosed by a wide low bank of earth and stone with a shallow external fosse. The original entrance was not recognisable. The rath has since been levelled and only its outline, defined by a scarp (H 0.4-0.5m), is identifiable. Compiled by: Patrick F. O'Donovan Date of upload: 26 August 2011
