Burial in Clonascra — Report the wrong picture

Clonascra holds a prone skeleton buried without goods near Clonmacnoise, waiting for meaning rather than displaying it. The body lies at the edge of a gravel ridge, angled across the earth like a person caught mid-step. Thirty-six metres away an enclosure shadows the burial, suggesting the dead did not leave empty-handed but joined a larger arrangement now lost to time.

Human remains, discovered at the edge of a gravel ridge at Clonascra near Clonmacnoise in August 2001, were excavated by Anne Carey under licence no. 02E636 on 21 May 2002. A single prone human skeleton, 1.5m long, was orientated north-east/south-west. No finds were associated with the skeleton, which was in poor condition. A Neolithic burial, likely dating to the 4th–3rd millennium BCE, associated with early funerary practices in the midlands region of Ireland. Its location near Clonmacnoise suggests a possible link to later monastic and ritual landscapes.
