Clochan

What is recorded here

Púicín na bhFothrach: Originally a group of 7 clochauns, but 4 were removed to provide building material for a high enclosing wall to a field/garden, and the 3 remaining were incorporated into the latter (Macalister 1899, 275; Curran no. 6). The largest structure was apparently inhabited in about 1847. (1) In the N wall of the field. An oval structure of corbelled drystone construction, with a lintelled wall-cupboard in the interior. D: 3.1 x 1.5m. H: 1.5m. (2) In the NE corner of the field. Almost completely obscured by collapse and field clearance debris but described by Macalister as 5-sided on plan with a maximum internal dimension of 1.8m. (3) Survives as a buttress-like projection, 2.5m high, against the E wall of the field. No means of access to interior. The above description is derived from J. Cuppage, ‘Corca Dhuibhne. Dingle Peninsula archaeological survey. Ballyferriter. Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne’ (1986), no. 1218. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
