Freagh Castle stands in Freaghcastle, County Clare, a four-storey tower house built in the late fifteenth or early sixteenth century for the O'Brien clan. Its thick limestone walls, narrow windows, spiral staircase, murder holes and surviving barrel vault show that defence mattered more than comfort. Ivy now covers much of the exterior, and the roof has collapsed, yet the chamber still faces the open sky like a room waiting for people who stopped coming home.
