Fearann na gCeann, the territory of the heads, lies north of Cnocan na mBan in County Galway. Local tradition holds that O’Briens slaughtered one another until almost none remained, while their women watched from the hillock to the south. Skulls dug from that field gave it a name sharper than most Irish landscapes, turning ordinary soil into a ledger of fratricide.

Represented in name only on the OS 6-inch maps. The field to the N of Cnocan na mBan (hillock of the women) (see GA110-048----) is known as ‘Fearann na gCeann’ (territory of the heads) from the skulls that were dug up here following a battle between the O’Briens who are said to have slaughtered each other almost to extinction while their women watched from the hillock to the S (Robinson 1980).
