Church in Cork City

The parish church of St John the Evangelist in Cork is associated with a hospital (CO074-080----) of the same name which was founded in or near Douglas St on the S bank of the river Lee in Cork c. 1191 and which was probably united, with a sister foundation in Waterford, to the Benedictine monastery of Bath in or before 1204. In 1381 the prior of Bath was in possession of the church of St John the Evangelist in 'Le Fairgh' in Cork. A deed of 1323 suggests that the church may have stood on the N side of Douglas St and to the E of the Augustinian foundation known as Red Abbey (CO074-041---) but its precise location remains known.
