Until at least the 1840s, children died in Baile Ghainín and were buried on a raised stone platform beside a kinking field wall. The ground stands two metres above the surrounding earth, marked by low uprights and scattered quartz that still catch the light. It is not a grand cathedral of the dead but a small, stubborn ledge where ordinary families placed their youngest beneath the open sky.

Calluragh Burial Ground/An Cheallúnach: Children were buried here until at least the 1840's (OSNB Kilquane, 30) when the site was described as 'a small square plot about 1.5 chains (30m) each side'. The present remains abut the SE side of a field wall, which kinks outwards at this point, and consist of an irregularly-shaped platform, measuring 17.5m WSW-ENE x 11.2m NNW-SSE. The stony upper surface of the platform lies c. 2m above the general level of the field and the upper portion, c. 1m high, appears to be crudely stone-faced in places. Two low uprights, 1.2m and .65m high, are probably grave-markers and the loose stones scattered on the platform surface include some quartz. The above description is derived from J.
