Cross-slab in Castledermot

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

In Castledermot, a tapering granite slab lies recumbent in the graveyard north-west of the modern church. Its incised Latin cross still marks the stone, though the hands that cut it and the names they honoured have dissolved into centuries of rain and forgetting. The slab remains a quiet witness, holding the shape of devotion long after the words of prayer have vanished.
In the graveyard (KD040-002031-), to the NW of the modern church. A recumbent, tapering granite slab (dims. L 1.65m; Wth 0.30-0.57m; T 0.26m) carry's an incised Latin cross. (Bradley et al. 1986, vol. 2, 102; Corlett 2003 93-94 Slab 2) Date of upload: 8 September 2016
Date likely to the early medieval period (7th–10th century), associated with the spread of Christianity in Ireland. The Latin cross suggests a funerary or commemorative function, possibly marking a Christian burial within the graveyard.
