Castle

Castle, unclassified

What is recorded here

Dooncaha may hide a lost castle, but no wall, yard or broken glass has yet shown itself. In 1657 a castle appeared in one list while Richard Stephenson held the land, yet the wider Civil Survey never named it. The place still refuses to explain itself, keeping its shape back from human memory.
The precise location of a doubtful castle site in the townland of Dooncaha has not been identified. Westropp (1906-7, 245) recorded the following details about a doubtful castle in Dooncaha; 'Not marked. 1657 The C[astle]. shown. (D.S.B., 3). 1655 Ric. Stephenson had held Down Cahie (C.S., p. 85). A doubtful site'. No mention of any castle in Dooncaha on the lands of Richard Stephenson in the 1654-56 Civil Survey of Limerick (Simington 1938, 321).
