What is recorded here
Castle, unclassified in Bunree: John O’Donovan recorded an O’Dowd castle near the Moy in the 1830s, already cleared away. It stood at the NE edge of Ballina where the Brusna joins the Moy, close enough to water for life and trade but gone before measurement. What remains is a lost angle in the townland, perhaps a courtyard, doorway or garden buried under forgetting.
This record refers to a castle in Bunree townland. This townland is located at the NE end of Ballina town at the confluence of the River Moy and its tributary the Brusna. The castle was recorded in the 1830’s by John O’Donovan in the OS Letters as follows: ‘There was another castle belonging to O’Dowd in Bunree Townland, which was totally cleared away a few years ago. I saw where it stood a short distance from the Moy on the Sligo side.’ (O’Flanagan 1927, 353 (147)). Its exact location remains unknown.
