Entrance gateway, erected c.1860, at road end of linear avenue to Castle Leslie. Square-plan tooled limestone piers, with chamfered corners and recessed panels to each elevation, rounded capping, string courses and cornices, on moulded bases, flanking double-leaf cast-iron gates. Maker's insignia 'Shekleton/Dundalk' to slam bar. These finely-executed piers and gates, although no longer in use, form a grand entrance to Castle Leslie. These and other gates and lodge are the demesne's main point of communication with the wider landscape, and the site speaks of passage between two distinct social worlds. The craftsmanship evident in both the tooling of the limestone piers and the moulding of the cast-iron gates and railings is notable. The site forms part of a group with the associated gate lodge, and the estate walls of Castle Leslie which adjoin the piers to either side and helps to highlight the linear entrance avenue.
