You can still picture the water pulling back its dead during drainage work near Carrownaglearagh, giving up one skull in 1996 and more remains in 1998. The river did not bury them so much as hold them, waiting for people to come with buckets, sieves and intention. Even now the place feels less like a field than a chamber where the living must learn patience before asking the water what it keeps.

In 1996 drainage works on the W-E Carrow River just before it enters Lough Laure uncovered a human skull which was acquired by NMI (1996: 34). Subsequently, in July 1998, further human remains were recovered in dredging operations, including a skull which was thought to be that of a female and which was also acquired by NMI.
