What is recorded here
Indictated is a double-walled fairy fort on a Mayo ridge, its outer gap flanked by a large boulder and its inner chamber crowded with six possible house sites. The bay below has vanished under drainage, but the scrub still chokes the stones and local memory insists a hidden passage runs beneath the floor. People may have lived there before the myths moved in, yet the fort now belongs more to breath and shadow than to anyone living above it.
Just off the summit at the S end of a N-S ridge, in dense birch and hazel scrub overlooking Levallinree Lough c. 120m to the W, and originally overlooking a small sheltered bay c. 30m to the S which has since dried out as the result of drainage. When inspected in 1983 (SMR file), the monument was found to comprise an oval-shaped area (int. diams. c. 34m NE-SW; c. 29m NW-SE) defined by the remains of an inner and an outer stone wall with an intervening fosse.
The inner enclosing wall (int. H 1.5m; Wth 2m; ext. H 2.5m) had a gap (Wth 1.7m) at NNW which appeared to have been rebuilt on either side and which did not appear to be an original entrance. The fosse (Wth 2.5-3m) was flat-bottomed. The outer enclosing wall (int. H over fosse 2.5m; Wth. 2m; ext. H 1m) was partially tumbled, its outer facing stones in particular having slipped outward. It contained a denuded gap (Wth 2m) at S which was flanked on its W side by a large natural boulde, suggesting an original entrance.
The interior contained six possible house sites (MA070-039002-) and there was a local tradition that it also contained a Man-made underground passage (MA070-039003-).
When reinspected in 2025, the monument was found to be densely overgrown and impenetrable in parts.
