Indicated

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Indicated is a buried fairy fort in County Mayo, its oval rampart half-swallowed by conifers and forgotten human hands. The land still holds the shape of a threshold, even when memory has stopped naming it. What was built there may have been a home, a marker, or a warning, but the earth kept the line and the forest grew around it like a secret being told twice.
Located on the SW-facing slope of a natural elevation, 50m NW of a river that flows through an expanse of mixed rough pasture and bogland. The area is now covered in coniferous forestry. Broadly oval area (c. 35m NE-SW; c. 25m NW-SE) defined by a low earthen bank, largely reduced to a scarp (H 0.45m at NW), and enclosed by a fosse (Wth 4.5m) with an external bank (Wth 3.5-4m; int. H 0.85m; ext. H 1m). Dense overgrowth impeded inspection of the rath. Compiled by: Jane O’Shaughnessy Date of upload: 5 June 2018
