Saint Mary's Church (Carrigaline)

Freestanding mausoleum, built 1754, comprising rectangular-plan single-bay pedimented building. Rubble stone walls and roof. Elliptical-headed arch having cast-iron railings to north elevation. Recumbent female figure set on limestone pedestal with engraved plaques. Plaques in tripartite arrangement behind statue.

Erected in memory of Susanna Wandesford, wife of Thomas Newenham of Coolmore, who died in 1754, this mausoleum is an fine eighteenth century example of its type. Classically inspired, the regular form and simple pediment are typical features of its time, while the recumbent figure is shown in contemporary fashion. The plaques behind the statue are memorials to subsequent members of the Newenham family. Set close to the later, early nineteenth century church to the north-east, it forms part of a group spanning several centuries of fascinating grave markers and monuments.
