Fairy fort / earthen ringfort in Carrickrobin

Fairy fort / earthen ringfort

What is recorded here

Fairy forts are not for the use of man. In Carrickrobin, a ringfort is called a fairy fort because it looks empty, not because it is dead. The field walls and remaining south-eastern bank preserve the shape of a place where people lived, worked and left behind the kind of silence that makes others invent ghosts.
The following description is derived from both the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986) and the 'Archaeological Survey of County Louth' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1991). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 17 July 2007 Circular area, now only traceable as modern field walls, with portion of bank surviving at SE.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
