What is recorded here

Indicated is a moated site in Carns, County Roscommon, Ireland. It occupies the bottom of a southeast-facing slope at the north edge of a west-east valley. Earthen banks and outer fosses define a rectangular grass-covered area, although the northeast and southeast banks are removed. The east corner curves outwards as if it incorporated a rath.
At the bottom of a SE-facing slope and at the N edge of a W-E valley (Wth c. 100m; D c. 10m). Rectangular grass-covered area (dims 60.5m NW-SE; 36.9m NE-SW) defined by earthen banks (Wth 2.6-4.5m; int. H 0.1-0.5m; ext. H 0.7-1.6m) and outer fosses or moats (Wth of top 5.3-5.8m; Wth of base 1.8-2.5m; D 0.1-0.8m). The banks are removed on the NE and SE sides and the E corner curves outwards (diam. 23.3m N-S) NNW-E-SW as if it incorporated a rath (RO028-130001-). See the attached aerial view taken from the ESE.
