Cuan Mhuire

Detached three-bay single-storey L-plan gate lodge with dormer attic, built c.1880, with gable-fronted bay and gabled porch to front. Now in use as clinic. Two-bay single-storey late twentieth-century extension to north-west. Pitched roof with fish-scale pattern natural slates, decorative terracotta ridge cresting, and stone copings to gable-fronted bay and end gables, with limestone ball and spear finials, and rendered chimneystack over entrance bay. Timber-clad dormer window to rear elevation. Replacement uPVC rainwater goods. Coursed random rubble limestone walls with proud cement pointing, dressed raised limestone quoins, and moulded limestone plinth. Square-headed openings with stone sills, chamfered cut limestone surrounds and having label-mouldings to gable windows and to extension. Replacement timber doors and windows throughout. Set back from road behind curvilinear stone wall with decorative wrought-iron railings, having gardens to side and rear.

This gate lodge, though modest, is finely detailed and in indication of the importance of Coolaran House. The well executed stonework and fish-scale roof slates make the dwelling visually attractive. The gate piers and railings compliment the setting of the building and together they announce the entrance to Coolaran House.
