Fairy fort / stone ringfort in Cahermackirilla

Fairy fort / stone ringfort

What is recorded here

Cahermackirilla holds a broken stone ring at the edge of a steep blackthorn plateau, where a second cashel waits seventy-five metres away. The first wall dropped or never finished, leaving large stones scattered across the grass like a forgotten meal. People may have lived there briefly, marked the boundary, or simply dumped rock before moving on. The land kept the shape anyway, holding the failure and the intention together under the thorns.
At the SE corner of a blackthorn-covered plateau, with very steep slopes (H c. 10m) immediately to the E and S. This poorly preserved subcircular cashel (c. 20m NW-SE; 19.5m NE-SW) is defined from NE to SW by the intermittent remains of a wall base, made of large horizontally laid stones; elsewhere only a bank of tumbled stone (Wth 3m; H 0.5m) marks the perimeter. Another cashel (CL009-056----) lies c. 75m to the ENE. Compiled by: Mary Tunney and Conn Herriott Date of upload: 11 July 2022
